SPRING BREAK MYRTLE BEACH 1954

THIS JUST IN!

From the attic of Robert Clark................comes an exciting episode in THE ADVENTURES OF MYRTLE BEACH, 1954!

Folks, this was "SPRING BREAK"..........before that term was even invented! Return with us now....to those thrilling days of yesteryear.........Scroll down to almost the very end of this site to view this historical documentary.

WARNING: Parental guidance is advised!

Here's a perfect example of how kind the members of our class were. Robert Dodge and Johnny Culp are shown here coming to the aid of a fellow classmate, who obviously sprained his ankle.

Thanks for the pictures, Robert!

Look What We Found!

The committee sent me some long lost pictures (well, 10 years anyway) that haven't seen the light of day since our 40th reunion! WHAT a find! I've posted them ....almost all the way down...at the entire end of this website....just after the big picture of us at our 40th. Also, you'll see pictures of some of our classmates who served our country in the military. You'll be amazed at one of the Vietnam remembrences......

(Plus, we've started a list of all who served.....but we need some help. Please look it over and help us add to it. Ideally it would be nice to have pictures (in uniform) as well.)

PS.....Exciting things are happening here at the CHS54 website; first of all we have found several of our "missing" classmates! Also, we've hired a new reporter......you may remember him.....the incomparable.............SAM SALAMANDER! So get ready for a lot of "breaking news" and "stop the press" action from the "Dean of the Key Club Directories."

AND...

We're getting MORE pictures almost everyday. Be sure to keep checking. I put the latest ones in the WE'VE GOT MAIL section

<

As always, please check the enclosed list of "lost" classmates. We need help in locating them. Maybe you've communicated with one of these over the holidays. Anyone who provides information which helps us locate a lost classmate will receive a "free drink" ticket for use at the reunion.

Best wishes to all,

CHS'54 Reunion Committee"

Let's have a big round of applause for the Reunion Committee!

Chairman: Obie Oakley

Peggy Bedsol (Gandy), Jerry Gaudet, Shirley McCIanahan (Maynor), Marlene Ritch (Beaty),

Tootie Bryum (Nesbit), Jackie Hart (Lookabill), Shirlene McGill (Yeargins), *Ernie Phipps, Charlie Willis, Johnny Culp, Bonson Hobson, Mitzi Minor (Roper), and Mary Psomadakis (Renfroe)

* Regrettably Ernie passed away 1/15/04

Due to a "typo".....the address listed in the letter you got recently....was incorrect. The correct address for you to send your pictures to (either past or PRESENT) is:

.....and PLEASE do! I think it would be of great interest for all of us to see each other as we are today.......even if we don't look exactly like we imagined we'd look 50 years ago.

-Ed

Lost in Space.....or somewhere.....

Scroll down to the very end of this website and take a look at the list of our classmates that we've been unable to find, and see if you know where any of them are. Happy scrolling.

Jerry Gaudet writes to say:

It is with great sadness that we learned of Ernie Phipps passing. On Thursday night, 1/8/04, Ernie participated fully in a meeting of the CHS'54 Reunion Committee. On Friday afternoon, 1/9, while at his work, Ernie suffered what has been discribed for us as a massive stroke. Ernie was in a coma for several days and passed on Thursday, January 15, about 4:45 PM.

For Charlotte Observer obituary, scroll down to "recent passings" section.

The committee is hard at work planning our 50th reunion. Now that the schedule has been set.... get ready to make some solid plans to attend.

Meanwhile, Obie sent me a couple of snapshots of several members of the committee hard at work.

Marlene Ritch and Jerry Gaudet .....and.......... Mary Psomadikas and Peggy Bedsol. Photos by Ernie Phipps who passed away Thursday, January 15th.

We've got MAIL!

(As we get closer to our magic 50th, let's all begin communicating here in cyberspace; perhaps using this site as a bulletin board, or sounding board, or whatever you want it to be. Frankly I'd love to see some old photos from our days at Central.....that haven't been published anywhere before, as well as present day photos. For example, I think you'd all be surprised to learn that I still have my stylish 1954 "crew cut." Unfortunately, the crew bailed out. Other than that, I'm pretty much the same as I was (in my own mind). Let's hear from you ALL!)

The large group picture was taken at Ernie Phipps' Celebration of Life. L to R: Mitzi Minor Roper, Peggy Bedsol Gandy, Charlie Willis, Beverly Smith Garmon, Shirley McClannahan Maynor, Jerry Gaudet, Shirlene McGill Yeargins, Bonson Hobson, Jackie Hart Lookabill, Marlene Ritch Beaty, Johnny Culp and Obie Oakley.

The four ladies are: Mamie Goodwin Baucom, Tootie Byrum Nisbet, Beverly Smith Garmon and Betty Rose Templeton Palomba at lunch 2004.

The lady sitting with her family at the fire place is Alma Burton Stevenson, kids and grandson.

Thanks to the Committee for a good program. What a great idea for the bus tour, (of course I may have already seen everything trying to find the hotel

Remember not too expensive.......we're all senior citizens on Social Security fixed income!

How many of us can YOU recognize?

Ran across this photo recently. It is Mrs. Craig's 4th grade class at Midwood School. Of the 34 pictured, 27 graduated with us 8 years later.

Obie

...and HERE is the Elizabeth School 4th grade:

(The brilliant kid wearing the sailor cap has requested that he not be identified. However, he is NOT the kid pictured on the Cracker Jack

box.)

Here's one more from Midwood. This is a 5th grade class.

Herb Jacobowitz

"This is that yankee kid from New York City, who came to Central HS for his senior and best year in high school. Although a northerner for so many years, I did wind up living the last forty years in Maryland, which is south of the Mason-Dixon line. Perhaps now you could say I am a southerner. My wife Barbara and I will be attending the 50th reunion. I wouldn't miss this one. The first day of the affair is my older daughter's fourth wedding anniversary and my younger daughter is getting married this August 1st. See you all soon."

I have attached a picture of me taken just before my daughter's wedding, June 4th, 2000.

Madison Avenue's latest Ad for...................

.............almost anything...clean and wholesome...clear and refreshing....cooler than cool......the epitome of successful Americans circa 2004!

But, guess what. It's our own Maxcyne Motte! She and her husband Dr. Yaworsky, live, and hike, and ski....in Utah.

Is life good, or what!

(Editors note: Although all of us CHS grads suspect that she probably won a gold medal, Maxcyne insists that she is only wearing the "uniform" she had while working as a volunteer during the 2002 Winter Olympics.)

Gene Moore checks in.......

The person on the left is me (an English teacher would require that I say "on the left is I"), and in the middle is Barbara, my wife of 42 years. The 30-year-old 6-foot, 3-inch creature on the right is our son, Russell. Although born in Florida, Russell had the good sense to attend college at Carolina, where all decent people go. When Obie asked me to send this picture I did so reluctantly because, unfortunately, my photo editing software is not good enough to shrink my waist size down to what it was when I attended Central.

Congratulations to the Reunion Committee on it's fine work and also to you, Ed, on your great web site. Barbara and I are looking forward to seeing all of you in June.

A little avalance action on Ellen Abernathy Bates and husband Pat's front porch. Roberta is obviously retrieving something.

Ellen and Pat live in Wyoming and tune in to this site often, I understand. Frankly folks, in my opinion, being born in the 1930's gives people our age an appreciation of what a miracle the internet is far beyond what can be comprehended by today's young whippersnappers. (Thank you Gabby Hayes. I just couldn't wait to get old enough to use that word.)

If you'd like to listen to some of the great music of the 50's, the absolute best site on the web is one created by a very nice man named Jerry Rutan for his graduation class of 1951...(Roosevelt High in Ceder Rapids, Iowa). The site starts off with the soundbites of our time, which is well worth listening to...but you don't have to. Scroll down under the "eagle" and you will find a menu called "The Time Machine"...click on the kind of music you'd like to hear, and then click "go" in the lower right corner of the menu box...then click on the song you want. PREPARE TO BE AMAZED!

Enjoy!

SENIORS

This section is reserved for us "seniors" to post some pictures of ourselves......as we are TODAY. There are no rules...you can also include a snapshot or two from the past that might be meaningful to the rest of our class. The easiest way to get your pics included is to email them to me at:

lee@ceoexpress.com

.

John Talbutt (L), Lindsy Farris and Obie Oakley(R) were the first to enter this section with a shot taken in Linsy's office in New York in March of 03. There's something about this picture that makes me think of the National Enquirer. It seems to me that those young, thin, bodies.......don't belong to the attached faces. But....I could be wrong.

.

George's Grill

In addition to the picture of his favorite restaurant of all time, Ed Myers submitted a photo of himself and one of his earliest heros:. Whitey........of Whitey and Hogan....the famous Briarhopper duo!! The pic was taken in Charlotte in June of '03.
.

(Editor's note: Whitey's real name is Roy Grant. If Ed had been paying attention........he might have met whitey sooner than he did. Unbeknownst to Ed, Whitey's daugher, Yvonne Grant, a sophmore, sat directly behind him in the CHS orchestra.

RECENT PASSINGS

Derek Knell

Responding to our Reunion Registration package, Derek Knell's wife, Cetta, informs us that Derek passed away last year. 47 classmates have now passed.

Dear Jerry,

My name is Cetta Knell and I am writing to inform you that sadly we lost Derek on October 23, 2003. He had 2 serious heart attacks within 1 week and underwent a 5-way by-pass operation. However, there was too much damage and he passed away 8 days later.

The joy of his life was his family, especially his 7 terrific grandchildren, thanks to our 2 sons. I think he would have enjoyed attending this reunion if only to brag about them.

Have a great 50th reunion celebration. I hope many former students attend and share memories. Best wishes to all of you.

Concetta Knell

The information I have for his widow is:

Mrs. Cetta Knell

12013 Neenach St.

Bobby Small

In our search for classmates we have just learned of the passing of Bobby Russell Small on November 17, 2002, after four years of struggling with kidney failure. His wife's contact information follows should any of you care to express your sympathies.

A letter to the class from Jerry's daughter:

I was so excited and touched that my father was mentioned on the website chs54. Central High School was a very special place for him.

I remember the day that he attended the 40th reunion, it was such an exciting event for him. I heard about it for an entire month before the event even took place!!! I was exhausted because he talked about it every week.

He was so excited to see his classmates for the first time in years, it meant the world to him to see all of the people he grew up with, especially in the Elizabeth neighborhood. Of course my dad loved a good party and an exciting social event was always his forte.

To see his class picture makes me laugh. He has not changed a bit. His smile was infectious and he was always laughing. He brought such a simple joy into everyone's lives. His pictures carries a carefree tone, like he has no worries in the world. You can even see the same smile in the 40th reunion picture while standing next to Bobby Seagraves, his best friend since the day he was born.

He was so excited to see the old Central High School during the reunion. I believe that he was hired as the architect to renovate the inside of the school some time back for Central Piedmont. My father was an architect for many years but, I think the renovation was his most proud accomplishment in that it brought back many memories.

I think everyone would agree that my father is irreplaceable and he is deeply missed. To have such a generous happy person leave us seems unfair but, I see his class picture and it reminds me of the man he was and the type of person that we all strive to be.

Thank you.

Ashley Lamar Ledwell Copenhaver

SNAPSHOTS

This was a very familiar scene........looking down from the top steps in the front of Central. This shot was actually taken in 1951. What strikes me most is.........the boys are wearing long raincoats. I don't remember those being as everpresent...as they are in this picture. I think we fellows were wearing short jackets...and windbreakers...by 1954.

NEW BOOK JUST RELEASED

A couple of years ago, I was surfing the web for some information about my old home town of Charlotte and came upon some delightful articles about the Queen City. (My favorite was the one about Charlotte's "urban removal" plan of the 1960's.) One of the stories featured a picture of the author. SHAZAAM! It was our own Mary Norton (Kratt)!

Mary Norton Kratt

Now, she has a new book out:

Celebrating New South Women: Twentieth Century Women of Charlotte, North CarolinaCharlotte, NC-The Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County and Levine Museum of the New South announce the publication of New South Women: Twentieth Century Women of Charlotte, North Carolina by Mary Kratt. The arresting voices of the women themselves tell their stories. Using personal interviews, archives, and reports from books and newspapers, author Mary Kratt conveys an immediacy as lively as front-porch talk. White and black, poor and rich, these women saw needs and answered them. They became a political coalition, mentored others and experienced being the "first woman" in many fields. Whether seamstress, mill worker, teacher, athlete, novelist, humanitarian, or socialite, the women of the New South in Charlotte exhibited the amazing tenacity and ingenuity that has long characterized women's lives.

REPORTERS NOTEBOOK

One of our stealth reporters found this accolade posted prominently at the Charlotte YMCA

"Charlie has been a member of the YMCA for 55 years. He literally grew up in the Y, joining when he was 10 and learning how to swim.As a parent, he has participated in youth basketball as an assistant coach. Charlie has been instrumental in committee work and our community outreach programs. He helped raise money in our last Capital campaign, worked for the last four years in our phonathons, served in the community gifts division for numerous years and on the chairman's Roundtable division for the past 3 years. He has served in so many capacities including 10 years on the fitness Center Committee of which he was Vice Chair for 4 years, he has served the past two years as Chair of the membership development committee and has also been a member of the Board of Advisors for the last two years as well. Charlie is a walking, living example of the YMCA and what we stand for."

Charlie Willis

Congratulations to a fellow Tadpole (That's the award we got after learning to swim at the Y......at least that's what they called us in the 40's) However, now that this in on the internet.........communities all over the country are going to be tempted to kidnap Charlie.....and clone him. Be careful Charlie, be very careful. -Ed

A Salute to Our Heros

Yes, that's what they are, heros. The men and women who are wiling to fight, and even die, for our freedom. Central had a great record of men and women who answered the call, and the class of '54 was no exception. Our committee chairman, Obie Oakley emailed me the following:

"Recently, classmates Calix Reneau and Pat Faulkner were asked to send a photo for the class web site. They both made careers in the U.S. Marine Corps. Thought it would be interesting to see them as they were in Vietnam.

When Calix responded, he offered the following: "Our infantry company was on a rescue mission attacking a position and the situation on the ground was pretty grim. It was the close air support we received saved the day and many lives. The flight leader of that mission was none other than classmate, Pat Faulkner."

Photo shows Captain Faulkner beside his F-4B Phantom. In his two tours in VN, he flew a total of 410 combat missions, was awarded 2 Legions of Merit, 4 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 32 awards of the Air Medal, 2 Bronze Stars and the Navy Commendation Medal. Pat retired after 30 years as a full colonel."

(Hopefully, a photo of Calix is on the way.)

Great story! And in case you've forgotten, Obie himself is on our heros list. Obie served 4 years on active duty as an Army officer, and then another 5 years as Captain with the Special Forces of the North Carolina National Guard.

And, not all of them returned.....

.

Charles Mateer was the first American to be killed in Laos. He was flying hellicopters for Air America (CIA) when he was shot down. This was in May of 1961, before anyone knew that we were fighting in Laos. Charles' name is not on the Vietnam Memorial in Washington because of a technicality (CIA instead of "official" armed services) but he was defending our country just as surely as any other member of our fighting forces. However, thanks to the wisdom and efforts of several Charloteans, two of whom we know very well, Jenny Margaret Meadow (Forehand) and Obie Oakley....Charles' name is prominently displayed on the Charlotte Vietnam Memorial, there on the grounds of the old Thompson Orphanage.

MORE... CHS'54 HEROS WHO SERVED......:

Robert Clark

Crosby Lane Spruill (Chuck) Tan Son Nhut airbase, 1965

" I had tried unsuccessfully for a number of years to find you folks and finally gave up thinking that when Central closed, so did all chances of finding former classmates.

I was found by Ellen (Abernathy) Bates, who called me one morning from Wyoming. She said they had been looking for me for a number of years. Thanks to the Internet and some of the search programs now available to the general public, she was able to explore in places never attempted.

As you may or may not know, I was a member of the class of '54 for only my graduating year. I never really got to know too many people in our class. I do remember not ever having a date with a single girl in our class because I was only 16 years of age during 80% of that final year. And you know how sensitive high school seniors are to age differences, especially girls who feel like they are dating sophomores. I remember having to invite a sophomore to our senior prom. She was thrilled.....So was I.

I spent most of my life flying airplanes for the Air Force. I was a career officer and fighter pilot. Something I dreamed of doing all my life. After retirement, I taught college for 15 years here in San Antonio, Texas. I was offered a very nice separation package in 1995 so I took it. They wanted to get rid of overpaid, tenured Profs.

I live in the small town of Schertz...a bedroom community adjacent to San Antonio, Texas.

I have been a Texan for 34 years now. When I left Charlotte 50 years ago, I rarely returned. I spent part of my life in Europe and Southeast Asia, as well as various assignments all over the USA.

I do hope to attend our reunion if at all possible. I think it must be some kind of rite of passage for seniors...a celebration of life that so many never get to participate in. I look forward to meeting you and continuing this conversation."

Warm regards, Chuck

Here's a perfect example of how kind the members of our class were. Robert Dodge and Johnny Culp are shown here coming to the aid of a fellow classmate, who obviously sprained his ankle.

Thanks for the pictures, Robert!

ANYONE ELSE HAVE ANY TO SEND IN???
