Thank you, Thank you

A great big thank you for a great program that came together beautifully. Martha and I had a great time at all events.

Harry Ferguson

Today I woke from a fabulous dream! It was one of friendly faces from my past, soft voices long-forgotten, new friends now discovered, and the glimpse of a beautiful, futuristic city, rising in glittering splendor above the green sea of trees that is the city of Charlotte, What an awesome adventure was my whole time spent at the 50th reunion.

Maxcyne Motte Yaworsky

The reunion was great. I appreciate so much all that was done. Let me know about other get-togethers, I just might be in town and can join you.

Jackie Pickard Marcotte

I tell you one thing, I've had a hard time coming home!! The reunion far surpassed all my expectations (and they were high to start with). I don't know what happened, but something magical!!

Betsy Villas White

Thanks to the committee for the wonderful fun weekend! I almost felt 18 again (Ha). It was great seeing everyone ....like turning the clock back.

Nancy Hartis Byers

What a wonderful weekend it was, to be sure! Thank you all so much. Although I have only the foggiest idea of what a monumental job you all did - - best proof of how good a job it was, seems to me to be how smoothly all went! Bless you.

Diana Carpenter White

Thanks for a wonderful job that resulted in making the reunion a most memorable occasion. My wife and I had such a grand time, which we will never forget.

Herb Jacobowitz

A tremendous thanks to the committee for all that was done for us. Really enjoyed the bus ride and being taken back in time 50 years.

Bill Huntley

"You members of the Reunion Committee did an outstanding job. My suggestion is that you form a corporation and devote yourselves to putting on conventions, with your expertise you could make a fortune."

Gene Moore

"How wonderful to see you and to feel time evaporate as we caught up on each other's lives. Thanks so much for planning such a pleasant reunion".

Linda Garmon Huggins

"A great big thanks to the committee for a wonderful reunion. It was quite an unusual experience to be with people I spent 12 years of my early life with".

Mike Andrews

"Thanks for all the hard work by the committee on our behalf."

Al Widenhouse

"Just want to tell you and the committee what a great reunion it was. You all did a great job getting everything together".

Mary Sandra Shulken Costner

"How can we thank the committee for the memories of a lifetime?!! Chet and I had the most wonderful time."

Andrea Stalvey Davis

"I think y'all pulled off something rare and brilliant. Ed, Ellouise and Neil completely held the attention of everyone. I really came to show my respect for the work and spirit behind the planners. I didn't expect to be totally charmed".

John Talbutt

"My compliments to the committee for a super weekend, talking and visiting with classmates. Looking forward to the next one".

Joe Broadway

"Just wanted to thank the committee for all your hard work. It really paid off. Everyone had a wonderful time, and the whole event was just great - Beautifully arranged and so much fun! Everyone I talked to said they had a great time."

Jane Hoke Bultman

"A quick note to tell the committee how much we appreciate what you did to make the reunion a great success".

Warren Sparrow

CONGRATULATIONS!! THANKS! Of course, those expressions are inadequate to say what Jeanette and I felt at the reunion. Thanks for being so meticulous. God bless you. Now rest!"

Bob Yandle

"What a fantastic event! Congratulations! I'm just now coming off the "high" of the weekend. So again, my thanks…..to the committee…..for a wonderful experience."

Ed Myers

"What a grand time was had by all I know of at the reunion…expecially ME! The whole committee is to be HIGHLY commended. It was just so much fun."

Carolyn Minogue Meacham

Thanks for all the vision and hard work for our reunion. It would not have been so great – and fun without good leadership!

Jennie Margaret Meador Forehand

Thanks so much for the class bios. I am in the process of reviewing them and like to think our classmates turned out to be a “pretty good bunch”. They cleaned up nicely over the years. Keep the committee together. I promise to attend the next one!

(Note: Pat had to cancel the day before the reunion began due to a family illness.)

Pat Faulkner

The committee did a marvelous job and I can’t think of a thing I would have done differently. Everything was well planned and seemed to go off without a hitch. We shared the details of the event with our friends here in Minnesota and they were very complimentary of our reunion.

John Ballard

Thanks for all the effort that went into making it such a special weekend. I especially appreciated the “smoke free” environment.

Sandra Lineberger Patterson

Thanks for all the work you guys did in organizing the 50th. There were a lot of people I recognized right away. We should have come down Friday night. Thanks also to Gene Moore for the CD. God Bless.

Jim Cook

Turn out the Lights

OK....so it's time to clean up the website, and prepare for our next one. Our 60th? Well, maybe our 55th? How about doing it again next week? I'm all for it. Of course, I'm not one of the ones who did all the work. Those special CHS 54 grads on the committee did it all.

Look Out Charlotte,

We might do this again!

Nothing official, of course, that's just my heart speaking. But as your handsome, highly intelligent, trim, agile as a gazelle, and modest webmaster.....I have a plan. Here it is: Let's let the committee (the worker bees behind the curtain who made our 50th...truly MAGIC!) rest..............for about six months....or a year. By then, the shock of working their fingers to the bone.....for MONTHS making our 50th so successful....will have worn off.

Then, we'll start dropping subtle hints........to each of the members; something like, "Incidentally, what have you done lately for the Class of '54?" or "Isn't it about time you got your boney fingers back to work for your fellow classmates?"

Meanwhile, I'll start pruning this site. Now yaw'll keep tuning in...because it's going to become even MORE exciting than ever.......DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL!

Betsy Villas White's Poem

THOUGHTS ON THE EVE OF MY 50TH HIGH SCHOOL
REUNION

By Betsy Villas White

SO SHOULD I START WHERE ONCE DIANA STOPPED
IN WRITING OUR COMMENCEMENT POEM SO DEEP?
OR SHOULD I SKIP THE PAGES WE HAVE TURNED
AND JUMP RIGHT TO THE DAY WHEN WE WILL MEET?

I DON'T EXPECT TO FIND THE FACES I ONCE KNEW
I KNOW THEY WILL HAVE CHANGED AS MUCH AS MINE
BUT UNDERNEATH I HOPE TO FIND THE SPARK
OF FRIENDS AND TIMES FOR WHICH I OFTEN PINE

IS LAUGHTER STILL ALIVE BEHIND YOUR EYES?
WILL I NOTE THE AGILE BRIGHTNESS OF YOUR MIND?
HAVE YOU GROWN IN LIFE AS ONCE YOU WISHED
OR DID YOUR DREAMS BECOME A DIFFERENT KIND?

I WANT TO KNOW HOW YOU HAVE WEATHERED STORMS
I YEARN TO ASK HOW YOU HAVE COPED WITH DEATH
I WANT TO HEAR WHAT WISDOM YOU HAVE LEARNED
AND WHAT BRINGS JOY AND MEANING TO EACH BREATH

AND YES, I KNOW, THESE WISHES ARE UNSPOKEN
WITH EXPECTATIONS FAR BEYOND THE NORM
BUT ANYTHING I GAIN FROM MUSING THUSLY
COULD POSSIBLY EMERGE IN VERBAL FORM

THE MORAL OF THESE WORDS IT SEEMS TO ME
IS WHEN YOU SEE ME COMING TOWARDS YOU WITH A SMILE
BE SURE YOU ARE SURROUNDED BY YOUR BUDDIES
AND DON'T ASK ME TO STAY AND CHAT AWHILE

The Commencing (From 1954 by Class Poet Diana Kay Carpenter)

Each one has bold sharp edges on the base
That he has set to build his living on.
And in defiance of conformity,
He claims each jutting angle as his own.

He wishes not to differ with his kind,
But eldersâ€Âï½ set traditions chafe his wings;
He wants to be a part of life that soarsâ€Âï½
Of life that dreams, and does, and life that sings.

The outline of that base pray God to soften,
By some part added here, subtracted there,
So that the whole be separate and distinct,
Yetâ€Âï½part of all thatâ€Âï½s best and all thatâ€Âï½s fair.

Pray each man be not worn to dreary sameness,
With every other being placed on earth;
But let his nature, different from all,
Work well with all, that each best proves his worth.

Website Talk

NOTICE: Your bright, hirsuit, handsome and amazingly thin webmaster is in the process of making this site easier to navigate. Instead of wearing your mousefinger out....scrolling through page after page of brilliant observations and commentary......only 3 or 4 of the newest postings will appear on the main page. However, all of the material is accessable by simply clicking on the appropriate title in the archive....to the right of the page. Each page only lists 10 articles from the past, so if you don't find what you're looking for on page one, go to another page. You'll find it on one of them.

Now, TALK BACK!

When you click on an archive item in the menu on the upper right side of the page, that article will open up. When you get to the bottom of the page you will see the word COMMENTS. Click on that to post an instant message for all to see! (Actually it's not quite "instant"...sometimes you have to "refresh" the site...or go away and come back a couple of minutes later...before your post shows up....but it WILL show up.) If you change your mind...and want to delete your comment you can do so by simply clicking on the small "trashcan" icon at the bottom of your post. HOWEVER....only the person posting the comment can delete it......no one else can (except, of course, your kindly, old webmaster.)

IS THIS MAGIC, OR WHAT? .

A Walk Around Town by Frank Clontz

During my early high school years in 1953 I lived in the Chantilly section and usually walked from my house on Bay Street to Central Avenue; catching the old #2 Oakhurst Bus and riding to the intersection of Central Avenue, 10th Street and Louise Avenue. The old Colonial Store was located in the same building that Swing 1000 is in now and across Louise Avenue was Bennick's Drug Store. In the mornings I would walk down Central Avenue to the 600 block stopping to visit my Grandparents before school. The few minutes at my grandparents were extremely happy times because I had lived in that house before moving to Miami in 1947. In the afternoons I would walk with friends from school to Bennick's Drug store where we would hang for an hour or so every afternoon. I made some lasting friendships, helped Mr. Bennick with knowledge I learned working part time at the Soda Fountain in Stanley's Drug Store. I have very fond memories of those afternoons in Bennick's. The memories of those I knew are still fresh in my mind. Many of the friends I made have moved or passed on since then, however, their faces and the teenage laughter are still very clear in my mind. God, I miss them all.

On the weekends I would walk from my house to Independence Boulevard where Hanover Street intersects. Then walk to 7th street, taking time to walk around the remaining section of the Rose Garden before walking on to Elizabeth Avenue where I turned right, passing Central High School and on to 'UPTOWN' to Parker & Gardner Music Store. It was an every Saturday event in my High School Years. I would wait until there were customers in the store then I would walk in play a chord or two on different pianos then I would sit at one I knew was in good tune and begin playing. The customers would gather to listen to the songs I played and because I knew just about what was popular during their youth, I would have them requesting their favorite ones. I guess I helped sell a few pianos, after my marriage I played at Swain's Steak House and Parker Gardner made me a pretty good deal and the Baby Grand Piano I used.

After playing the piano most of the morning I would then take an hour or so and walk around the first block of North Tryon Street looking in the windows of all the stores. National Shirt Shop, Andrews Music Store and Ivey's on one side then make my way to Woolworth's across the street, stopping for a bag of fresh popcorn or just looking. My last stop would be Leggett's Drug Store where I got a sandwich and a coke before returning to Parker & Gardner's for another hour or so before walking home in the early afternoon. The things I miss most in life now is the ability to walk the as I did when I was younger, looking at the buildings and houses along the way, especially the beauty of nature in the trees and flowers. I would walk in the Rose Garden on the return trip; stretch out on a bench or the top of one of the cement-covered areas next to Sunnyside Avenue. I would just lie there and soak up the aroma of the roses and fresh cut grass. I especially liked that area because it, along with Independence Park, was my playground as an eight-year-old before going to Miami when there was no Independence Boulevard, imagine that! The first few blocks of Central Avenue carry some of my fondest memories, sadly it has all changed now but I still get a lump in my throat when I drive from 7th Street to Hawthorne Lane. I miss the walking; I miss my friends from Bay Street, Commonwealth Avenue and other streets in that area and I miss my youth. I know we can't go back, I guess that is why God allows us to remember some of the happy times of or youth and forget the sad. Isn't it great?

Holiday Inn Retirement Plan

And, while we're waiting for the pictures to arrive, ponder this........from my friend John Alexander, with whom I worked years ago at a radio station in Washington.....and who now lives in Charlotte. John is also the author of GHOSTS, Washington Revisited.

My father-in-law just sent me his Senior Care Plan. Sounds so good and logical I thought I'd pass it along. He writes:

"There's no Assisted Living Center OR nursing home in my future. When I get old, I'm checking in at the Holiday Inn!

The average cost for living in one of those nursing home places is at least $188.00 per day. I've already checked on reservations at the Holiday Inn. With a combined long-term-stay discount and my senior discount, it's $49.23 per night. That leaves me $138.77 a day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in any restaurant of my choice--or room service and laundry, gratuities and special TV movies. Plus, Holiday Inn provides a swimming pool, a workout room, a lounge, washer, dryer, etc. Most have free toothpaste and razors, and all have free shampoo and soap.

They treat you like a customer not a patient. Five bucks worth of tips a day will have the entire staff scrambling to out do each other in providing me service.

There's a city bus stop out front and seniors ride free. To meet other nice people I'll just call a church bus on Sundays. For a change of scenery I'll take the airport shuttle bus and eat at one of the nice restaurants there. While I'm at the airport, maybe I'll fly somewhere once in a while. Otherwise, the cash keeps building up.

It takes months to get into a decent nursing home. Holiday Inn will take your reservation today. It also appeals to me that you're not stuck in one place forever---you can move from Inn to Inn, or even from city to city. I may want to see Hawaii one day. There are Holiday Inns there, too.

Broken TV? Light bulbs need changing? Time to replace the mattress? No problem!!! They fix everything and apologize for the inconvenience.

The Inn has a night security person. The maid checks to see if you're okay. If not, she'll call an ambulance or the undertaker.

If I should fall and break a hip, Medicare will pay for the hip and Holiday Inn will upgrade my accommodations to a suite for the rest of my life.

And...there are no worries about visits from family. They'll can just check in for a few days mini-vacation. The grandkids can use the pool. If they're under 12 they stay/eat free (just not in my room).

What more can I ask for? Not much. So when I reach the golden age I'll face it with a grin. Just forward all my e-mail to me @holidayinn.com."

Dick Gault Principal of Piedmont Jr. High

Personally, I'm overwhelmed that these giants from the past will be joining us for our 50th celebration!

......and from the office staff:

Betty Cunningham!

Life is GOOD!

BREAKING NEWS:(June 1, 1004)

Maryland State Senator Jennie Forehand (Jennie Margaret Meador)gets set to ride her bike from Montgomery County Maryland.......to Charlotte, NC to attend the great CHS '54 reunion this weekend!

(OK.....she didn't actually say that.....but it's been a slow news day....and this site needs a little spicing up.)

Actually, that's the very same bike (and crepe paper!) that Jennie used in a couple of CHS events!

Jennie Margaret and husband Bill Forehand will be at our celebration, but probably without the bike.

...and REMEMBER.....for all of you who are traveling long distances to attend our event......as OFFICER PRESSLEY used to say:

"Watch out for dogs pushing baby carriages!"

*Photo compliments of Jennie Margaret Meador

FINAL......FINAL........list of Classmates attending:

Notice.....there are several late additions......Sam Salamander reports that Bobby Wells will be there (Sam knows that Bobby was one of my first "football heros." Bobby was the only 8th grader who made Irv Edleman's Piedmont Panthers. He was number 13........and one of the best tailbacks to ever play for Piedmont)

Guy Soule (number 19) is another late registrant who will be joining us!

......there are others that you didn't think would be there.....but checked in under the wire! ......take a look!
