Sharlene Elizabeth Morris Lightfoot
Ms. Lightfoot, 70, of Davidson, passed away on Friday, September 30, 2005, in Mooresville. She was born July 5, 1935 to the late Charles Alexander Morris and Sue Elizabeth Reynolds in Stone Mountain, GA. She was soon joined by a brother Charles A. Morris; in 1939, the family relocated to Charlotte NC where Sharlene grew up, attended school and became interested in music. She sang as a young girl in the Westminster Presbyterian Church choir under the direction of Oliver Cook and later at Covenant Presbyterian Church under the direction of Richard Peek. Private voice lessons prepared her to sing with the Charlotte Opera Association, the first teenager in the history of the company to be hired as a singer. Later, she performed in the first productions of the outdoor drama, Horn in the West, in Boone, NC. Her musical talent led to a partial scholarship to Queens College from which she earned a bachelor of art's degree in English; from there she went to Ohio University in Athens, Ohio on a teaching fellowship while studying for a master's degree in English. Ultimately she wed another graduate student and left behind academic life to follow her first husband, Barney Brewton, to Colorado and finally to Atlanta where her much loved son Marc Cambon Brewton was born.
The family is being served by Cavin Cook Funeral Home in Mooresville. Mrs. Lightfoot will be cremated, according to her wishes, and buried adjacent to her husband Paul in the rock wall at St. Patrick's Church in Mt. Mourne. Funeral services will be held at St. Patrick's church in Mooresville at 11: 00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 4. Services will be conducted by Gary Steber and Mark Bourlakis.
