Mary Norton Kratt reports that,
Jackie Pickard Marcotte, whose father died in Charlotte in January '07, lost her daughter Mary to cancer on Tuesday, February 5 in Houston, TX where Jackie lives with husband Chuck. Merry Adele Marcotte went peacefully to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 6, 2007. Born in Charlotte, NC on December 29, 1968, Merry is survived by her parents, Charles Edwin and Jacqueline Pickard Marcotte, her brother Thomas C. Marcotte, and his fiancée Celani E. Cano. Merry is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who have played an important role in her life. Growing up in Northwest Houston, Merry was a 1987 graduate of Klein Forest High School.
After being selected for the Texas All-State Choir in 1987, Merry chose to pursue a Choral Music Education degree at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX, where she was an active member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. She continued her higher education and attained a Master of Arts in Counseling degree from Prairie View A&M University. Merry was very passionate about her faith, family, friends and music. She was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Houston and was a scholarship singer, soloist and substitute conductor at the church for over ten years.
Her faithful Christian service and dedication to the church are recognized and lovingly remembered by those with whom she served. In living out her faith, Merry was also very loyal to her family and friends. Those close to her have shared that they will miss, but fondly remember her attributes of demonstrating character and integrity, instilling strong values and encouraging others to grow and succeed. As testament to Merry's commitment to her music profession, she was a dedicated choral music teacher for seventeen years in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District.
Merry compassionately led and mentored students at Truitt, Labay, Cook Middle Schools, and Cypress Falls High School. She loved working with the choir students, and it was important that her students learned leadership and life skills while they were striving to develop musically. Her choirs were consistent award winners during her tenure with CFISD. As head director at Cook Middle School the boys' choir was chosen to perform at the 2006 Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio, TX. Merry was selected as the Cook Middle School "Spotlight Teacher" for the 2003-2004 school year. Her professional affiliations include American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), Texas Choral Director's Association (TCDA), Texas Music Adjudicators Association (TMAA), and Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA).
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to all of Merry's students, friends, colleagues and church family whose continuous prayers gave her encouragement and strength. A special thanks to Robert A. Wolff, M.D. and MD Anderson Cancer Center for their kind and loving care. Merry taught each of us a great deal about life and commitment, and she will be missed by her family, students, friends, and colleagues.
