On the Road Again

I got a Christmas note from Jennie Margaret(Meador)and Bill Forehand and (surprise, surprise) their globe trotting ways didn't slow down one bit during the past year. In fact, this past year's itinerary my head spin! Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, Pudong, Sushou, Yi Chang.....five nights on a Yangtze River Cruise etc, etc.

In addition to all the great experiences, Jennie was also able to do a little business with the Chinese on behalf of her county (Montgomery) in Maryland. Senator Jennie was there to help develop a "sister/county" relationship with the technology center of China.

Another one of their trips, a bit less spectacular, was attending a three day conference in Lancaster, PA, about the Lewis & Clark expedition.

If Lancaster ever decides to modernize the conference, they might well consider naming it the "Jennie and Bill expedition."

PRIZE WINNERS!

Heck, this website wasn't even having a "Proud Grandmama and Grandaddy Great Photo" contest, and already we have a couple of winners:

The names of these "future Wildcats" are being withheld....pending an investigation by the CHS54 staff of lawyers to determine if these photos are authentic. We suspect that they may have been produced by some Hollywood Movie Studio looking for free publicity for a few of their new stars.

(Remember, click on pictures to enlarge!)

Stay tuned.

Oh, one more thing,

if you know anyone from the CHS class of 1949, there is a Snips and Cuts book available for that year for sale on eBay.

The ad says it once belonged to Sandra Henry.

The listed price is $45.

If anyone is interested, click HERE.

Herb Jacobowitz Recovering

Herb Jacobowitz's wife Barbara informed us that Herb

"... had a mild stroke last Saturday. He had minimal affect from it, mostly just his right leg feeling heavy. He came home on Tuesday and is walking around. He's getting physical therapy for the leg and will get some occupational therapy for his left hand, which is a little weaker than his right. He's in great spirits and is expected to make an almost complete, if not total, recovery.

He's used to working out three times a week and being a "perpetual teenage boy", so this is requiring some adjustment on his part, at least for the short term"

As you folks remember, Herb was our token Yankee at CHS. But we sons and daughters of the South grew very fond of Herb and his strange way of talking. However, we all hated being in any of his classes that graded on the curve.

That stands for "Let's Do Lunch."

It's now more than just an expression among our 54 Wildcats. (By the way, don't call me a "senior" unless you're talking about my final year at Central!)

It's now a monthly EVENT!

For the third straight month, JIMMIE'S of Mint Hill came alive with the magical sounds of old friends from a very special time and place, meeting, greeting and eating! (Sometimes, even I, get chills down my spine reading my unparelled prose!)

Our Ace reporter Jerry Gaudet adds:

"We enjoyed December's CHS'54 "Let's Do Lunch", but missed many of you. Perhaps you'll join us at upcoming lunches...the second Tuesday of each month.

Attending were:
Buck Anderson and wife, Peggy
Gayle Barrier Austin
Vic Brawley

Good as New!

Mitzi Minor Roper reports that Shirley McClannahan Maynor is recovering nicely from a hip replacement operation. By the time you read this, Shirley has probably already started walking.....again. Although slowly.

I understand that she will be staying in the hospital a few more days, then off to Rehab!

For those of us who don't reside in Charlotte, the next time we see Shirley will be at our 55th reunion this May..........where, I'm sure, she'll be "dancing til dawn!"

Rip, Run and Read

That's what we called it.....back when I was working at small radio stations. We announcers were not only the DJs, but once an hour we would have to read a newscast. That usually meant running to the newsroom grabbing the latest news summary and ripping it off the AP teletype machine......and running back to the studio...and reading the news. It was considered cheating...if you looked at the copy before you read it on the air.

When ROCK and ROLL came along, these stations became known as 5R stations. (Rock and Roll, Rip Run and Read).

But I digress.

What made me think of that is that I'm looking for a catchy title for posting bits of news about us CHS54 people....

A few that I have rejected are:

"Breaking News" (At our age, that's not such a good idea)

"Newsbreak" (Same reason)

"Odds and Ends" (Never mind)

So, PLEASE, if any of you have a suggestion for a catchy title that I could use, please let me know.

The latest note is one I got from Neil Jones:

"Ed. Fulfilling that ancient adage of Socrates, that says, 'It's

a sorry bird dog that won't brag on it's puppy.", your man on

the Pee Dee River, (Jones), reports that his daughter Holly Jones

led the ticket in

her election to the Buncombe County Commission. She is

completing 8 years on the Asheville City Council.

Also, Jones' other child, Coach Matt Jones, is leading the Anson County Bearcats

from Wadesboro this Friday against Olympic High of Charlotte

in the Quarterfinals of the State 3AA playoffs.

This communication is pure "bragging"

Thanks, Neil. And congratulations!

As I've mentioned before, my real job for the past 20 years has been "talking on the radio" for a company in New York called NEWS BROADCAST NETWORK. Basically, that's what I was doing 59 years ago at WGIV.

I plan to keep doing it until I get it right.

Meanwhile, my hobby is playing TV at the Fairfax Virginia Cable station. We finally got the Program we did with Hollywood Mogul, Barry Levinson edited and on the air....and I thought some of you might like to take a look as we discuss the "old days" in TV up here at channel 9 in Washington.

Let's do Lunch a big success AGAIN

We may not be the first CHS class to start meeting once a month for lunch, but when WE meet.....PEOPLE TALK!

Jerry Gaudet tells me that,  "One of Jimmies regular customers stepped in to ask "what group was meeting?"  He said "I'm so envious.  Everyone seems so happy and glad to see each other."

(The first picture shows: Paul Patton (Left Forefront),  Lou Palomba, Betty Rose Templeton Palomba, Charlie Willis,  Marlene Ritch Beaty, Carol Cullingford, Harold Cullingford and Al Selby.)

The next one shows (L to R):
Ronnie Rallis Pourlos,  Carolyn Keziah Hudspeth, Jimmie Pourlos, Gail Barrier Austin, Bee Smith Garmon, Betty Hull Nixon, and Vic Brawley.

The last one shows: (L to R)
John Culp, Shelton Patterson, Sandra Lineberger Patterson, Pat Hill, Martin Hill, and Jay Summey.

Veterans Day

As one of our memorable teachers at CHS used to say (darned if I haven't forgotten her name, although she wasn't the only one) it BEHOOVES me to repeat this post from our CHS54 website which first appeared here in 2004.

Unfortunately, some of the pictures are missing....lost somewhere out in Cycerspace.

However, it's good to be reminded of CHS54's TRUE heros.

I suppose you could call it an "electronic poppy" for this Veteran's day, 2008:

A Salute to Our Heros

Yes, that's what they are, heros. The men and women who are wiling to fight, and even die, for our freedom. Central had a great record of men and women who answered the call, and the class of '54 was no exception. Our committee chairman, Obie Oakley emailed me the following:

"Recently, classmates Calix Reneau and Pat Faulkner were asked to send a photo for the class web site. They both made careers in the U.S. Marine Corps. Thought it would be interesting to see them as they were in Vietnam.
When Calix responded, he offered the following: "Our infantry company was on a rescue mission attacking a position and the situation on the ground was pretty grim. It was the close air support we received saved the day and many lives. The flight leader of that mission was none other than classmate, Pat Faulkner."
Photo shows Captain Faulkner beside his F-4B Phantom. In his two tours in VN, he flew a total of 410 combat missions, was awarded 2 Legions of Merit, 4 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 32 awards of the Air Medal, 2 Bronze Stars and the Navy Commendation Medal. Pat retired after 30 years as a full colonel."

(Hopefully, a photo of Calix is on the way.)
.
Pat Faulkner

Great story! And in case you've forgotten, Obie himself is on our heros list. Obie served 4 years on active duty as an Army officer, and then another 5 years as Captain with the Special Forces of the North Carolina National Guard.

.

And, not all of them returned.....

.

Charles Mateer was the first American to be killed in Laos. He was flying hellicopters for Air America (CIA) when he was shot down. This was in May of 1961, before anyone knew that we were fighting in Laos. Charles' name is not on the Vietnam Memorial in Washington because of a technicality (CIA instead of "official" armed services) but he was defending our country just as surely as any other member of our fighting forces. However, thanks to the wisdom and efforts of several Charloteans, two of whom we know very well, Jenny Margaret Meadow (Forehand) and Obie Oakley....Charles' name is prominently displayed on the Charlotte Vietnam Memorial, there on the grounds of the old Thompson Orphanage.

MORE... CHS'54 HEROS WHO SERVED......:

Robert Clark

Crosby Lane Spruill (Chuck) Tan Son Nhut airbase, 1965

" I had tried unsuccessfully for a number of years to find you folks and finally gave up thinking that when Central closed, so did all chances of finding former classmates.
I was found by Ellen (Abernathy) Bates, who called me one morning from Wyoming. She said they had been looking for me for a number of years. Thanks to the Internet and some of the search programs now available to the general public, she was able to explore in places never attempted.

As you may or may not know, I was a member of the class of '54 for only my graduating year. I never really got to know too many people in our class. I do remember not ever having a date with a single girl in our class because I was only 16 years of age during 80% of that final year. And you know how sensitive high school seniors are to age differences, especially girls who feel like they are dating sophomores. I remember having to invite a sophomore to our senior prom. She was thrilled.....So was I.

I spent most of my life flying airplanes for the Air Force. I was a career officer and fighter pilot. Something I dreamed of doing all my life. After retirement, I taught college for 15 years here in San Antonio, Texas. I was offered a very nice separation package in 1995 so I took it. They wanted to get rid of overpaid, tenured Profs.
I live in the small town of Schertz...a bedroom community adjacent to San Antonio, Texas.

I have been a Texan for 34 years now. When I left Charlotte 50 years ago, I rarely returned. I spent part of my life in Europe and Southeast Asia, as well as various assignments all over the USA.

I do hope to attend our reunion if at all possible. I think it must be some kind of rite of passage for seniors...a celebration of life that so many never get to participate in. I look forward to meeting you and continuing this conversation."

Warm regards, Chuck
