Tom Mix and kid

My Tom Mix decoder ring was completely befuddled by this...so I turned to the Internet...and voila...the code was broken....and now I can read my grandkids text messages!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

You know you're getting Old if...

--At the breakfast table you hear snap, crackle, pop and you're not eating cereal.
\
--Your address book has mostly names that start with Dr.

--You tell your kids their history book is wrong. You should know. You were there.

--Getting "lucky" means you found your car in the parking lot.

--It takes two tries to get up from the couch.

--It takes twice as long - to look half as good.

--You give up all your bad habits and still don't feel good.

--You have too much room in the house and not enough room in the medicine cabinet.

--When happy hour is a nap.

Boffo Performance

WYTHEVILLE COMMUNITY CHOIR

Possibly the best Community Choir in Virginia, the Wytheville musicians continued thrilling audiences Tuesday evening at their annual Christmas Concert.

One of the reviews of the event stated that:

"I am still glowing from such a wonderful concert. I've never had goosebumps pull on my arms like they did on Glory, Glory.  It was a night to remember!"

Look closely at the photo above and you will see CHS 54's own Don Nance.

Congratulations to Don and the entire Wytheville Community
Choir!

Blue Screen of Death

Blue Screen of Death
That's perhaps the most unwelcome "message" that those of us who have come to depend so much on our computers ever want to see.

But, it happens to us all sooner or later.

My turn came last week.

Without going into detail, and admitting my own temporary (I hope) lack of judgement...no, make that stupidity... or, at best, lapse of caution....was  responsible.

However, in my defense, it was the "Perfect Storm."

Bottom line is:  NEVER, EVER ALLOW ANYONE ACCESS TO YOUR COMPUTER (VIA THE INTERNET) UNLESS YOU ARE POSITIVE YOU KNOW WHO THEY ARE.....AND YOU HAVE SPECIFICALLY ASKED THEM FOR TECHNICAL HELP!

In my case, I happened to be working with my Internet provider, VERIZON, trying to solve a previous "problem."  (I pay extra for technical help when needed by allowing their tech "geeks" to access my computer, and they work on the problem remotely.,)  I've had to ask for help a number of  times recently.)

And, on the specific "Day of Infamy"..I had been working with them not more than an hour before...when I got the Blue Screen of Death....with the message to call my provider immediately to solve the problem.

Without bothering to search for my friendly Geek's phone number..the Blue Screen  (conveniently) had their number (or what I assumed was Verizon's number) on the screen......which I called.

BIG MISTAKE.!

By the time I realized I had NOT connected with my one of my friendly Geeks, but the SCAM DEVIL himself, ....it was too late.

My computer was TOAST!

 Literally.

Not sure what new desktop computers cost these days, but I'm about to find out.

-Ed

(This post was written on my old woodburning computer purchased, I believe from Toys are Us....back when the Internet was called, Arpanet....or maybe it was called "The Worldwide Web,"..whatever....)

Sylvia Reese Plyler Passes

We were very sad to learn that our classmate, Sylvia Reese Plyler recently passed away.

This is her obiturary that appeared in the Charlotte Observer

Sylvia Plyler

Obituary

Sylvia Reese Plyler CHARLOTTE - Sylvia Reese Plyler, age 79, of Charlotte, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ earlyMonday morning, December 7, 2015. Mrs. Plyler was born in Greenville, SC, June 13, 1936. She was the baby of eight children of the late James Talmadge Reese and Lona Daniel Reese. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Douglas Walter Plyler, who passed away August 22, 2015. Also preceding her were her precious brothers and sisters, Grace Bridges, Margaret Penland, Helen Case, Cecile Helms, Doris Bess, Jimmy Reese and L. C. Reese, whom she loved dearly. Sylvia met the love of her life on a blind date, and they were married 57 years on March 1, 2015. She graduated from "Old Central High School" now known as Central Piedmont Community College. Sylvia started work at Met Life straight out of high school as a temporary secretary for summer vacations; they liked her so much they made a position for her. She excelled in all she did for the company and retired as the Branch Manager after 42 years. Sylvia loved her Lord, and strived to be with Him one day. She was a selfless person always putting others before herself. She was a member of Durham Memorial Baptist Church for 37 years. She was a member of the Joy Sunday School Class. She served her church in numerous ways over the years and always enjoyed it. She was a true and gracious giver. Surviving to cherish her memory and love is her daughter Rhonda (Jimmy) Keistler of Belmont, NC; two granddaughters, Jaime (Charles) McSwain of Gastonia, NC and Casey (Alex) Morris of Gastonia, NC and her great-granddaughter Addison (Addie) Reese McSwain. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Frances Plyler of Charlotte and Audrey Plyler of San Antonio, TX and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 9th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn West Funeral and Cremation Service. Services will be held in the Paul Helton Chapel on Thursday, December 10th, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Gene Boatwright officiating. Interment will be in Forest Lawn West Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Durham Memorial Baptist Church, 1601 Toddville Road, Charlotte, NC 28214 or to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 28204. Condolences may be made to Sylvia's family through www.forestlawnwest.com.
